Project "Reload"
This new season, we continue to explore Zaraysk, one of the most beautiful small towns near Moscow.
We explore the town as a space with subtle cultural links. These links have formed over many years, merged with its environment, and quietly woven themselves into everyday life.
Cultural Layers
in the Urban Weave
The art residency invites us to look closer
Mission
7.07
7.08
_26
We want to see how barely visible threads of other traditions weave themselves into the town over centuries. How they appear in architecture, household objects, and human stories.
What makes it unique is its multi-layered character. Details and nuances quietly speak for themselves.
Zaraysk's identity goes far beyond its rich past.
It is a living organism where the Palaeolithic rubs shoulders with the merchant era, and industrial heritage blends with contemporary culture.
A Residency at the Intersection of Layers and Meanings.
Artists will look for
Through contemporary art, the residency will become a place where artists can observe, research, and encounter new ideas.

Why Zaraysk Could Be Your Best Creative Time
A Summer Town That Inspires
You can walk to the ancient kremlin, merchant houses with carved window frames, factory buildings with their industrial look, and quiet, green courtyards. In summer, the town reveals a new side. The light, shadows, textures, smells, and birdsong create a unique creative mood.
Working inside the Machtet House, a historic mansion with a century-old past that now hosts the residency studios, becomes a unique creative challenge. The architecture, the atmosphere of the past, and the energy of the place talk to your artistic vision.
A New Experience in Historic Studios
A Touch of Nature
Zaraysk’s landscape has inspired Russian literature. Alexander Kuprin once worked in the Zaraysk district. He took in its landscapes and way of life. He later brought them to life in his stories, "The Swamp", "On Wood Grouse", and others. The Osyotr River, floodplain meadows, fields, and forests are all a ten-minute walk from the centre.
A Change of Pace
Time moves differently in a small town. Summer days are longer, and evenings feel softer. This helps you slow down, hear yourself, and focus fully on your work.
Residency Outcomes
The final exhibition will join the "Reload" contemporary art festival programme.
